Understanding your employment contract

What to check before you sign anything for a job abroad.

Why the contract matters

The contract — not a phone call or a chat message — sets out what you and the employer have agreed. If a promise matters to you, it should be written in it.

What to look for

  • Your job title and main duties.
  • Salary amount and currency, and how and when it is paid.
  • Working hours, off days and leave.
  • Accommodation, food and health cover, if offered.
  • Contract length and what happens at the end.
  • Who to contact if there is a problem.

Before you sign

Read the whole document. Ask about anything unclear and ask for it in a language you understand. Keep your own copy and take a photo of every page.
